It is usual practice for the railway to offer brake van rides during their gala events (although this didn't happen during the 2018 and 2019 events, and I wouldn't repeat the experience until 2023), subject to a supplementary payment, and, for the first time, I partook of the opportunity to do so, from Toddington to Cheltenham.  Finding myself at the "locomotive" end of the train, I decided to experiment with photographing the locomotive at various points on the line, including its entry to Greet Tunnel (East Portal).  The only slight downside was that I was slightly off-centre from the smokebox as someone else was in the centre position.

My initial experimentation led me to use spot metering on the smokebox, which generally meant that the locomotive was exposed correctly, although at times it tended to over-expose the rest of the shot.  However, at bridges and the tunnel, the background exposure was generally fine.  I recomposed and blurred the background for the final version as I felt the original exposure came across as somewhat static.
