I chose to record the battle re-enactment using my 500mm zoom lens as I initially thought I would be further back from the barrier than I was. Looking at the photographs as a whole, I might have been able to get away with the 250mm lens, but a lot of the photographs would have ended up even more cropped than they were. I may have lost some opportunities at close range, but it's likely I gained some at longer range because of my decision, and the lens performed very well indeed.
I also wasn't in as central a position as I had been in previous years but I don't think that was too much of an issue in this instance.
